Free From MENADIONE (Vitamin K3)
There has been much recent debate regarding the inclusion of Menadione (Vitamin K3) in commercial dog food. This ingredient is a synthetic version of Vitamin K1, and was thought to provide a stable source of the Vitamin K necessary for efficient blood coagulation.
Menadione has been studied for different applications, including cancer therapy in humans, and is not used due to its irritant effects towards the eyes, respiratory system and skin. Numerous other side-effects may result from large doses of Menadione, and these have given rise to some grave concerns about its usage not only as a human dietary supplement, but in pet foods too.
Vitamin K is indispensable to some intermediate factors in blood coagulation, and it reportedly also plays a role in protein metabolism and allows calcium uptake by the bones. However, a deficiency is only likely in very purified diets or in cases of illness.
As manufacturers of super premium pet foods, Arden Grange take any matters concerning health and nutrition extremely seriously. Although the level of Vitamin K3 used in our products was minimal, and therefore well within the safety boundaries, in the light of the concerns being expressed in the media, we have made the decision to remove Menadione from our dog foods. Meat is a natural source of both Vitamin K1 and K2, and the high meat proportion in Arden Grange diets ensures that adequate is available to meet canine nutritional requirements.

Arden Grange pet foods are hypoallergenic and contain no wheat gluten, dairy products, beef or soya. Nor do they contain any artificial colourings, flavourings and preservatives
