What You Thought

Lesley Short and "Rudi" the German Shepherd

"In June 2013 my much loved German Shepherd was very suddenly and unexpectedly diagnosed with an inoperable sarcoma and given a time of worse scenario 2/3 months, best 6 months. Needless to say I was devastated. There had been no signs of any illness up to this point. Rudi competes at grade 6 in agility - a high level for a German Shepherd - and he gets placed, having achieved two firsts! After a long discussion with my vet I decided to let him have chemotherapy, although originally I was against this as I have never met anyone who has said they would go down this route again. I also did a lot of research on the internet. One of the things that kept coming up was food. More specifically, grain free diets or natural food diets. I am not particular a great fan of a natural diet as I do not feel that I have the experience to determine whether my dogs would be getting everything that they require, I also worked full time and did not think that I had the time to do it justice. I have fed my dogs on Arden Grange for years and always been very pleased with it's performance both for puppies and adult working dogs, having had two German Shepherds that lived to 14 years, it made sense to me to ring Arden Grange and talk to their nutritionist Arden Grange could not have been more helpful; they were also very knowledgeable about the recent research that I had seen, and advised me accordingly. After a long discussion I decided to try the 'Performance' diet, not exactly grain free but more suitable for Rudi as he can not tolerate fish very well. I was also given advice relating to antioxidants, free radicals, vitamin E, protein and fat content, plus supplements. On top of this I was given information on fresh/wet diet, quantities to feed and also what not to feed - such excellent customer service, I can not thank Arden Grange enough. Only 4 months on and I am pleased to say that Rudi is still doing well. Apart from his shaved legs and side you would not know that there was anything wrong with him. He is still competing in agility and getting placed, his eyes are bright and his coat is good. His energy levels haven't altered all through his treatment. The main things I have had to watch for have been his appetite and what he passes as the chemotherapy drugs can cause problems. Only once has he not eaten his food and that was when we found out he had developed an abscess on his biopsy scar. This was sorted out with antibiotics and he was back wolfing his Performance diet down with gusto again - much to my relief! I am so pleased with the Arden Grange Performance diet that I have changed my 3 year old lurcher onto it and will also change my lurcher puppy onto it as soon as he is old enough although currently he is doing very well on the Arden Grange Puppy Junior Large Breed. I do not know how much longer I have with Rudi but I do know that he is happy and well fed and that I have done the best I can for him - with the help of Arden Grange" Many thanks to Lesley for her testimonial. We are glad Rudi is doing so well on his Performance diet and that the Lurchers are Arden Grange doggies too.

Using the Feeding Charts

The Arden Grange feeding charts will give an estimation of the daily feeding quantity based on your cat or dog’s weight.

It is important to remember however that these figures are guidelines only, and there are several factors to be taken into account when assessing your pet’s nutritional requirements : -

Activity level

Temperament (stressed animals burn off more calories than relaxed ones)

Metabolism (every animal is an individual with his or her own speed of metabolism; this means that 2 dogs of the same age, breed and weight could have different daily calorie requirements)

In order to provide the correct portions, it is also helpful to assess your pet’s appetite, visual appearance and stools. Whilst poo watching does not sound particular pleasant, it is one of the best indicators of health. Increased frequency of passing faeces, production of large quantities of stools of loose motions are often frequent signs that an animal is receiving more food than he or she requires.

It is important to obtain an accurate weight for your cat or dog, and also to weigh out the food. Guessing on both accounts gives a large margin of error.

If you require any assistance in calculating the correct feeding quantities for your cat or dog, please contact our nutrition adviser who will be happy to help.
