Weaning Kittens

ARDEN GRANGE complete dry KITTEN food is ideal for kittens of all ages. Our KITTEN food with its highly concentrated calories will provide all your kitten’s nutritional needs from weaning through to adolescence.

ARDEN GRANGE KITTEN contains human grade FRESH CHICKEN, which in addition to being easily digestible, is also palatable. This, combined with the small kibble size, makes it ideal for kittens who, with their small immature stomachs, need to consume smaller amounts of a high-grade food.

To use ARDEN GRANGE KITTEN food at weaning, it should first be soaked with warm water and mixed with a fork to form a smooth porridge. More warm water may need to be added to get just the right consistency for lapping. We recommend that kittens are initially fed on a portion-controlled method; this allows you to monitor their individual intake more accurately. Initially, you may need to encourage the individual kittens to take the food by placing some on the end of your finger and allowing them to either lick or suck, they soon get the idea. We suggest you leave the porridge down for 15 minutes at each feed, after which time you should remove any uneaten food. This routine will be repeated for each mealtime, usually 4 or 5 times a day. However, you may wish to leave a small bowl of dry food down to encourage the kittens to eat, and become accustomed to the dry textured kibble. The amount of water added to the porridge can be reduced gradually until the kittens are eating the food completely dry. The dry texture will aid oral hygiene, by reducing plaque, thus helping prevent the build up of tartar and gum disease.

As we have included all the essential elements of your kitten’s diet in ARDEN GRANGE KITTEN, including the correct balance of vitamins and minerals, there is no need to add any supplements. To add extras would upset the fine balance our nutritionists have created for your kitten.

Shortly after weaning, kittens lose the ability to digest milk sugar, lactose that is found in any mammal’s milk. Therefore, milk is best avoided as its consumption may lead to diarrhoea. However, it is important to provide a plentiful supply of fresh clean water. We also recommend that you do not use plastic bowls as these can deter cats and kittens from drinking, however, stainless steel, glass or pottery bowls are a useful alternative. Water fountains are often appreciated.
