Apple and coconut dog birthday cake

Is your precious pal's birthday or 'gotcha day' on the horizon? Well then it's time to start planning a few surprises and there is no better way to celebrate than with a scrumptious dog-friendly birthday cake.

Created by our very own nutritional advisor and registered Vet Nurse, Ness. This nutritious and delicious apple and coconut cake recipe is perfect for your pup's special day!

2 large eggs
10mls olive oil
200g grated apple (pips and cores removed)
75g desiccated coconut
100g chickpea flour
2tsp apple cider vinegar

1. Preheat the oven. Whisk up the eggs well (this recipe includes no raising agents so you need the air to help the cake rise).


2. Stir in the oil and vinegar. Whisk well.


3. Stir in the grated apple.


4. Stir in the coconut, and then the chickpea flour. The mixture should be soft and just pourable. If it is too loose add a little more flour; if it is too stiff add another whisked egg.


5. Bake at 200 degrees for 30-40 mins until golden (use a skewer to check the middle is cooked through).


6. Leave to cool on a wire rack (out of your dogs’ way!) Whilst the cake is still warm, you can top it with some finely grated hard cheese such as Grana Padano. If your dog cannot tolerate dairy, vegan cheese can be used. The cheese helps the decorations show up, and adds some extra savoury flavour.


7. Decorate! We used swirls of our Tasty Paste and Duck Training Treats plus a few pieces of the dogs’ favourite kibble.
   

• This recipe makes plenty of slices, so ideal for sharing with other doggy friends.


• Cake slices can be frozen if not used within 2 days (keep them in the fridge for freshness).


• Take extra care with candles and keep them out of your pets’ reach. Make sure candles and holders are removed and stowed away safely before serving.
