Grain free food enhanced with a unique superfood blend
Superfoods do not have a formal scientific or legal definition, but they are increasingly gaining wider recognition as foods that are rich in certain compounds, such as antioxidants, that may have benefits to our own health and that of our pets. The term is more than 100 years old, so the concept of healthful eating is perhaps not such a modern idea as you might think, although nutritional science has certainly developed since then! [Harvard, 2021].
The Arden Grange Superfood Blend comprises 10 natural ingredients with health benefits – sweet potato, coconut oil, spirulina, chia seeds and dark-skinned fruits & berries.
They all share powerful, antioxidant properties. A diverse selection of ingredients make up the Arden Grange Superfood Blend because antioxidants are not interchangeable, and many differ in both their site of action and mechanism. Their unique chemical behaviours and biological properties mean that one substance cannot do all of the work alone. The body produces its own antioxidants, but many of those found in plants cannot be manufactured.
Food provides raw energy, but it needs to be converted to ATP (adenosine triphosphate) to provide energy that the body can use. This energy is generated through the movement of electrons which takes place in the cells via reactions called oxidation (loss of electrons) and reduction (gaining electrons).
Free radicals are by-products of this normal and necessary process, and they are also produced after exercise, exposure to stress, infection, pollutants, and the sun. Their purpose is to help fight infection and repair muscle tissue after physical activity, but if their numbers exceed those of antioxidants, oxidative stress occurs - this can damage the cells and DNA, leading on to disease and premature ageing.
Free radicals steal electrons from stable molecules, which then become free radicals themselves and continue the chain reaction. Antioxidants have lots of electrons and donate them to unstable molecules helping to restore the balance.
